Okay, I do love the feasting of Thanksgiving, but I have to admit that in some ways, the leftover are even better. I don’t just mean the turkey piled high on whole wheat with really good mayo and homemade sweet pickles on the side. I do love a turkey sandwich!
What I really love is the laid back, nothing left to do but rest part of the Thanksgiving weekend. Football’s on but so are the first of the Christmas specials. (Nothing like the remake of Miracle on 34th Street to get you ready for the holidays.) Laid back. Want to nap? No one cares; go for it. Want to shop? Not for me the crowds at the mall, but if you love it, you’re welcome!
For me, a coffee with an old friend. A trip to the Square in this lovely small town – homeplace of my husband’s family – and stopping by the local arts center to see what the artists and artisans have been up to. Maybe a handmade ornament or two. Or some lovely local goat milk soap.
But mostly, a time to keep giving thanks. That the cooking is over (for now) but thanks that we had more than plenty. Thanks for good health – the best blessing of all. Thanks for family, friends, and yes, leftover turkey.
Time enough to hit the stores, hang the holly, pick out the cards, write the annual letter. For now, I’m lingering in the leftovers and loving every minute!
